When we talk about choosing between FR, FRLS, and ZHFR wires, we are not talking about minor variations in quality — we are talking about fundamentally different behaviours when exposed to fire. The type of wire you choose determines not just whether the cable burns, but what happens in the critical minutes of a fire: how quickly the flame spreads, how much smoke is produced, and whether that smoke is toxic enough to incapacitate people trying to escape.
In India, fire incidents in buildings — particularly commercial buildings, hospitals, and public infrastructure — have prompted increasing attention from regulatory bodies to specify the correct wire type for different environments. National Building Code (NBC) and various state fire safety regulations now mandate specific wire grades for enclosed public spaces.
Understanding the differences between these three wire grades is essential for anyone involved in specifying, procuring, or installing electrical systems — from homeowners to project architects.
Before understanding FR and its variants, it helps to understand the baseline: standard PVC insulated wire with no flame retardant properties.
Ordinary PVC (polyvinyl chloride) insulation, without flame retardant additives, will catch fire and continue burning when exposed to a flame. The insulation melts, drips, and can spread fire along the cable run. In a building fire, unprotected PVC wiring acts as a fuel source — accelerating the spread of fire through conduits and cable trays.
Standard non-FR PVC wire may still be used in low fire-risk environments where cables are protected by conduit, are not in areas with high human occupancy, and where fire barriers are in place. However, for most modern construction in India, FR grade is now the minimum acceptable standard.
FR (Flame Retardant) wire is made with PVC insulation that contains flame retardant chemical additives. The key property of FR wire is that it is self-extinguishing: when the external flame source is removed, FR wire stops burning on its own. It does not propagate flame along its length.
FR wires are specified under IS 694 in India, under the FR grade designation. The IS 694 standard includes specific tests — including the vertical flame propagation test — that the wire must pass to earn the FR designation.
Key characteristics of FR wire:
Self-extinguishing — stops burning when flame source is removed
Passes IS 694 vertical flame test (single cable and cable bundle tests)
Does not propagate flame along cable runs
Standard PVC insulation — produces smoke (including some toxic gases) when burning
Most common type for residential and standard commercial wiring in India
Available in full range of cross-sections from 0.5 sq mm to 16 sq mm
FR wire is the correct and sufficient choice for standard homes, apartments, and most commercial buildings. It is the minimum grade Elmeck recommends for any installation.
FRLS (Flame Retardant Low Smoke) wire goes a step further than FR. It retains the flame retardant property — the wire will not propagate fire — but additionally, its insulation compound is formulated to produce significantly less smoke and less acid gas when it does burn.
Why does smoke matter? In most fire fatalities, the cause of death is not the fire itself but smoke inhalation. Dense, toxic smoke from burning PVC wiring can make evacuation routes impassable within minutes. In large buildings with many people — hospitals, hotels, office complexes, shopping malls, metro stations — smoke production from cable fires is a life-safety issue.
Key characteristics of FRLS wire:
Self-extinguishing (same as FR) — passes flame propagation tests
Low smoke emission — reduced smoke density compared to standard FR PVC
Reduced acid gas emission — insulation produces fewer corrosive gases when burning
Compliant with additional smoke density and acid gas tests beyond basic IS 694
Required for: hospitals, hotels, commercial offices, schools, metro stations, multiplexes
Slightly higher cost than standard FR wire due to specialised insulation compound
If your project involves any enclosed public space, or if the local fire NOC specifies low smoke cables, FRLS is the minimum grade to use. Many architects and project consultants now specify FRLS as the default for all commercial construction, regardless of specific regulatory requirement.
ZHFR (Zero Halogen Flame Retardant) — sometimes called ZH (Zero Halogen) or LSZH (Low Smoke Zero Halogen) — represents the highest level of fire safety wire insulation available for building wiring.
Standard PVC insulation contains halogens — specifically chlorine — as part of its chemical composition. When PVC burns, it releases hydrogen chloride (HCl) gas, which is highly toxic and also corrosive to electronic equipment. ZHFR cables use a completely different insulation compound — typically based on polyolefin — that contains no halogens at all. When a ZHFR cable burns, it produces neither toxic halogen gases nor corrosive acid gases.
Key characteristics of ZHFR wire:
Flame retardant — passes rigorous flame propagation tests (more demanding than IS 694 FR tests)
Very low smoke emission — minimal smoke density
Zero halogen — no chlorine, fluorine, or other halogens in the insulation compound
No toxic or corrosive gas emission when burning — critical for life safety and equipment protection
Required for: data centres, telecom facilities, nuclear installations, defence, railway rolling stock, airport terminal wiring
Significantly higher cost than FR or FRLS, due to specialised halogen-free insulation material
The corrosion-free burn characteristic of ZHFR is especially important in data centres and server rooms, where acid gas from burning PVC cables can destroy electronic equipment even in rooms the fire did not reach directly.
